We dive into the issues that may help you make your decision about who to vote for in the next Canadian Federal Election
Hold on. We are on our way in Canada to having a new federal government leader.
In this article, we dive into the wild world of Canadian politics. It used to be stodgy and boring, but now we are in the 21st-century swing where lies are not hard to spot. In between putting imitation maple syrup on our pancakes and the NHL hockey game that used to be on the CBC, we will be inundated with lies, more lies and, as politicians are attuned to say, “untruths.” They are damn lies, idiot.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is gearing up to exit stage left. He certainly would not lean to the right, and we will be hit with what politicians believe we want to hear, not necessarily the truth.
The road to a Canadian federal election will come up fast, and it is time – maybe a bit too early, but the early bird gets the worm - to put on our thinking caps and figure out what to look for when choosing the next leader of our great land.
Now, it is time to dive into What May Be Cooking.
PARTY PROMISES
Let’s discuss party promises. It is essential to pay attention to what each party offers. When candidates roll out their platforms during the campaign, listen closely. They’ll present all sorts of promises and “truths,” from health care to the environment. Listen as they speak in generalities that sound great but are not measurable in any way.
Will they promise to make schools better? Or create more green spaces? Maybe they’ll even have a new plan for tackling climate change! Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that matters to you and provides the context of what their target is.
For example, if you are passionate about the environment, look for a leader who not only states his or her commitment to climate change but also describes what he or she will do about it.
If you are concerned about inflation and food costs, listen to what a leader will do to help all Canadians, and be concerned if he or she sounds like Trump.
THE LEADER’S CHARACTER
For some, this is not important—just look at the millions who voted for Trump and how many times Trudeau's transgressions were brushed aside. Not many years ago, a character meant everything, but not anymore. It is all about optics, and out-the-door substance has gone.
However, I believe character is still worth discussing, and I hope you will consider what kind of character you want in our next leader.
Being a leader isn’t just about the grand speeches and slick promises; it’s also about character. Remember how you looked up to particular teachers or sports figures? Well, it’s essential to consider if the candidate is someone you would look up to, too.
Are they honest? Do they treat others with respect? A good leader should be someone who lives by their word. If they say they care about something, they should act on it—not just talk about it during election season. Look for signs that they are genuine and not just good at giving speeches.
HAVE THEY BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK?
What about life experiences? What kind of background does each candidate have? Were they born with a silver spoon in their mouths, or did they grow up like you and me? There is much to say about a leader who has lived with what most of us have faced all our lives.
Do they have experience with issues that are important to us? Whether it’s health care, the economy, or the environment, it is worth checking their background to see if they have what it takes.
ARE THEY GOOD LISTENERS?
A key quality of a leader is connecting with everyday us. A real leader will spend time talking and listening to us, hearing what matters, and understanding the problems we all face.
DO THEY HAVE A VISION FOR THE FUTURE?
This is where you can test a leader. When discussing a vision for Canada, a leader can either overdo it with B.S. or keep it sharp with a dose of reality. Listen and you can certainly hear the difference.
What is their vision for the environment, sustainability, health, economic growth and a myriad of things that are important to our life?
CONCLUSION: THE POWER OF YOUR VOTE
As you prepare for the next federal election, remember your vote is your voice. It’s your chance to share your thoughts on what direction Canada should take. Select a leader who you believe can keep your faith.
Best wishes
